Start of the 1850's immigration wave
Majority of Chinese immigrants coming in from Hong Kong. Mainly single, young men expecting to make money from the gold rush under contracts with European Employers. Due to these contracts, some were locked into years of service for little pay, unable to leave and live life. -
Chinese Secret Societies and Chinese Immgration Restrictions
Secret societies were established for stability, protection and fairness for Chinese and Chinese Camps due to past violence from European workers via cutting off pig tails or general abuse due to cultural differences. Restrictions for chinese immigration was established in Victoria and later in other states due to surge in Chinese immgration from Hong Kong and other commonwealth cities in China. Such restrictions came from politicians expressing a extremely biased view to the state government. -
European favouritism and violence
European miners start violence against Chinese workers due to their fears of them taking their jobs due to their low pay. Many Chinese camps were burnt down. A hidden goldmine was confiscated from the Chinese when they didn't pay the 1 pound fee of owning the area. Many European workers refused to pay this fee as well with no punishments such as the Chinese workers were inflicted with. -
Riots in Australia
The first riot of six occured with 3000 European workers equipped with weapons and destroyed one of the Chinese camp located at Lambing Flat. Two hundred and fifty chinese were severely injured in this attack and many had their belongings destroyed and/or their pigtails, a major cultural distinction in China cut off..
