  • Continuation of the Misouri Compromise

    Why:There had been an equal amoutn of free states and slave states but when Misouri wanted to admit to the union, the balance of free states and slave states was messed up. So there was a dispute becuase the North thought it to be unfiar becuase if there were more slave state senators than free state senators. So the Mssouri comprimise came into the picture.
    Other details:Dispite the sucess of the compromise there were still disputes between the North ans the South about the expansion of slavery

    What: The Missouri comprimise was a compromise that settled a conflict the arose from Missouri's application for statehood..The compromise stated that Missouri would enter the union as a slave state, Maine Would enetr as a free state to keep the balance, and slavery would be prohibited in any new territories or states North of the southern border of Missouri.

    What: The Wilmot Proviso was a document thet stated the basic Idea along the lines of "neither slavery nor involuntary servitude shall existin any part of the (Mexican Cession) Territory,"
    Why: This was presented becuase some of the northerners wanted to ban slavery in all of the parts that made up the Mexican cession.
    Other Details: The Wilmot Proviso didn't pass infact it even caused a debate and showed sectionalism.

    What: The compromise of 1850 was a compromise that allwed Califronia to enter the unon as a free state. The compromise also said that the rest of the Mexican Cesion territory would be divided into Utah and New Mexico where both states would have the power to choose wheather to be a slave state or not with popular soveriengty.

    Where: The U.S.
    What: The Fugitive Slave Act was an act that made it illegal and a crim to help runaway slaves and allwoed officials to arrest in free areas. Also Slaveholders were permitted to take suspected slaves to comissioners.
    Why: To keep slaves ffrom running away or attempting to reach freedom
    Other details: African Americans who were accused could'nt testify and neither could the people suspected of helping.

    What :The Kansas-Nebraska act was an act that organized the remaining Louisiana Purchase territory so that the terreitoties could be added to the union.The act also said that popular soveirgnty would decide the question of slavery or not.
    Why:This would eliminate the Missouri Comprimise's restriction of slavery North of the 36* 30' line.
    Other detail:Antislavery supporters in the North were outraged and thought it was part of a plan to allow slavery in the area

    What: When Aboloitionistsamd slaverery supporters clashed. This clash caused saome battles such as The Attack On Lawrence and John Brown's Response.
    Why: The quetion of slavery was to be decided with popular soverignty and when the time came tp decide there were disagreements between the slavery supporters and abolitionists.
    Other Details: In John Brown's Response he and his men killed 5 slavery supporters. This is known as the Pottawatomi Massacre

    What: A slave named Dred Scott sued for his freedom, he argued that since he was living in a free territoryhe was free
    Why: Dred Scott thought living in the area meant he was freeas well as he just wanted his freedom
    Other Details: Cheif Roger B. Taney said that the nations founders belived that African Americans "had no rights to which a white man was bound to respect" He then concluded African Americans weren't U.S. citizens and couldnt file a suit

    What:The Lincoln-Douglas Debates were a series of debates between Lincoln and Douglas which was caused over the election for senator. During debates Lincoln always stressed over the expansion of slavery in the west . He tallked of the Dred Scott Decision and he said that African Americans were entitled to all rights. Douglas criticised Lincoln it would cost him some voters.

    Why: Lincoln challanged Douglas because both men were elected candidates for senators for the opposite parties. Lincoln was chosen for Republicand and Doulgas was chosen for democrats.Lincoln saw Douglas as an opponent so he challenged him.
    Other Details: The two debated several times in various locations of Illinois but in the end Lincoln lost but he still gained national recognition.
