Battle of Tours
On October 10, 732 AD, the Muslims or Moors had conquered Spain and wanted to continue to expand their empire. Charles Martel forced the Moors to fight uphill and once they attacked, Martels forces won and the Moors returned to Spain. -

Pepin asks Pope St. Zachary to name him king of the Franks. He agrees, along with St. Boniface and they anoint him in 751. -

The papal states
In 754, Pepin travels to Italy with his army to protect the Pope against the Lombards. The Lombards were defeated and Pepin gave the Pope the Papal states which are Rome, Rovenna, and Perugia. -
Bloody Verdict of Verden
The Bloody Verdict of Verden was a huge massacre of 4,500 captive rebel Saxons in 782. During the Saxon Wars, the Saxons rebelled against Charlemagne's invasion and tried to make them Christian from their native Germanic paganism. The massacre took place in Verden in Lower Saxony, Germany. -
Charlemagne crowned emperor
In the year 800, Pope Leo III asked Charlemagne to come to Rome. On Christmas Day Charlemagne attended mass at St. Peters and when he was done with his prayers, Pope Leo prostrated himself before Charlemagne and then placed a crown upon his head. Pope Leo then said "life and victory to Charles Augustus, crowned by God, the great and peaceful emperor of the Romans." This is significant because Charlemagne became the first emperor in the west .
