The Anglo-Saxons had a big influence on England; the name comes from "Angle-land". They divided the country into five kingdoms. Most of the basic words in the english language also come from the Anglo-Saxons. A monk called Augustine came to England and he slowly told people about the christian religion all over the country -

Vikings: From CE 800, from Denmark and Norway began to attack Britain. The most famous Saxon king was Alfred the great, he fought against the Vikings. Altought he won, he allowed them to live in the area around York.

600 BCE
The Celts
Lived in Britain in the Iron Age. They came from Central Europe. Some Greek and Roman writers, tell us that the Celts loved gold and fighting. Their priests were called Druids and had a great power in celtic society.
We know about the celts from the "bog bodies", are areas of wet land, if a body is buried in a bog it is kept in good condition perphaps for centuries. The celts were great warriors. -
55 BCE
Romans
The romans created many towns, if a modern British city name ends in -cester, -caster or -chester, it was originally a Roman camp because the Romans called them castra. The Romans improved the services in the country, and built straight roads. -

The Normans
1066 is the best-know date in Britis history. William became the first Norman king, called William the conqueror. The Normans built many castles and cathedrals. The Nromans created a feudal system, where they were the lords and the Saxons were the serfs. -

From 1649 to 1660 there was no king or queen in England. Crowell became "lord Protector". He took an army to Ireland where they killed many Irish soldiers and sent boys and women as slaves to the Caribbean. He also gave land in Ireland to his Protestant soldiers who came to live in Ireland. -

The industrial revolution began in Britain. The invention of new machines changed the way that people lived. The industrial revolution made Britain rich, but it also create problems, because the factory owners grew rich but the workers were often very poor. -
The victorian age
A women became queen of brtain and Empress of India, she fell in Love with Albert, a German Prince, and after her death she kept his memory alive. Her face was on first postage stampsin the world. During her reign many British men and women became world-famous, her name was Victoria, and there were many changesin society. -

Britain went throught more changes like: the population grew from about forty to sisty million, the country was involved in two worlds wars...
In 1921 the south of Ireland became independent. Northern Ireland stayed in the United Kngdom and the island of Ireland was divided. And finally in 1960 there was a great social change like: the role of women began, this was the time of the Beatles, the Rolling Stones... The British Isles entered the European Community in 1973. -
Into the Twenty-first Century
The Scottish parliment, the National Assembly for Wales and the Nothern Ireland Assembly make those nations more independent. In 2008 all the nations of the British Isles have been econòmic problems because of the world recession. In 2010 , London is getting ready for the Olympics in 2012.
