The British Industrial Revolution: Factory Acts.

  • Factory Act 1802

    This was the first Factory Act to be passed and it was about the rights of the apprentices.
  • Factory Act 1833

    The next Factory Act was in 1833 and it was about about limiting the time the factory workers were allowed to work. No one was allowed to work at night as this was prohibited.
    The average working day was to start at 5:30 a.m and was to comence at 8:30 p.m. Teenagers were not allowed to work for that twelve hours and children weren't allowed to work for more than nine hours with a one hour meal break.
  • Factory Act 1844

    This was the thrid Factory Act and it's purpose was to reduce the working hours for all children.
  • Factory Act 1847

    This act was about limiting the amount of hours to be worked per week for children and women to sixty three hours in total, and no more than that. This meant that the working hours were more relaxed.
  • Factory Act 1850

    This Factory Act meant that children and women were only permitted to work for more then ten hours per day.
  • Factory Act 1867

    The Factory Act in 1867 was made to restrict the hours during which children and women had to work in any manufacturing process conducted in an establishment where fifty or more persons are employed.
  • Factory Act 1874

    This Factory Act gave the women and children an extra half hour taken off their ten hour working day.
  • Factory Act 1891

    This was the final Factory Act it meant that the factories now had to properly fence off their machinery, the employers were not allowed to employ women within four weeks after confinment and the minimun age of which children were allowed to work was at eleven.
