My first word was "Nana" after my grandma. She was called "Nanay" by all my family which is Tagalog for "Mother". She spent the most time with me as my mom worked to support us as a single mom and was going to college also. -
Small Runner
I started to run. -
Big Girl
I was big enough for my mom to leave me at a day care. The lady's name was Elena and I remember looking up to her. She cared for my sister and I for free because my mom was one of her best friends. -
School Girl
I finally started pre school. I stayed at the day care because Elena teached pre school, too. I remember playing at the colorful playground and singing songs on rainy days. -
Stranger Danger
My mom met a guy on the internet in the midst of studying for school. His name was Robert Bottrell. He lived in Grand Rapids, MI USA. He was an 18 hour flight away. They kept in touch for two years. -
Chocolate and Toys
I didn't understand at the time, but after a year, my mom's new boyfriend visited our home in the Philippines. He brought lots of chocolate and toys and that was all I really cared about. -
A Whole New World
I moved from the Philippines to the USA. Some kids think moving schools is a big deal-- I moved countries. That summer, I met the Bottrell Family. -
