On this date, Betsy Ross made the first American flag. The first flag included 13 stars and 13 stripes because there were only 13 states in America at this time. -

On this date, this is what our flag looked like. As you can see, there are more stars. As we added more states to our country, more stars were added to our flag. At this time, there were 36 states. We still had 13 stripes to symbolize the first 13 states our country started with. -

On today's flag, we have 50 stars to symbolize the 50 states that we have in America. This flag has been around for 57 years! We have not added any states since so this is what our flag looks like today! Notice we still have 13 stripes to symbolize our first 13 states that American started with!
