Women inavde versailles and make the royal family return from versailles to Paris. -
National Assembly over Church
The National Assembly took over the church's land and declared that priest should be elected and paid as state officials. -
An Escape
Louis and his royal family tried to escape from France to the Austrian Netherlands. -
New Constitution
The National Assembly completed the new constitution, which Louis reluctantly approved. The constitution created a limited constitutional monarchy. -
War
As a result, some countries took action. Austria and prussia, for example, urged the French to restore Louis to his position as an absolute monarch. The Legislative Assembly responded by declaring war. -
Abolish Monarchy Goverment
The Legislative Assembly votes to abolish the monarchy and establish the First Republic. The measure came one year after King Louis XVI reluctantly approved a new constitution that stripped him of much of his power.
