    The 200 years of British rule endend in 1947 when India and Pakistan won independence. The new indepence created violence within Hindus and Muslims.
  • Berlin Airlift

    Berlin Airlift
    In April of 1948, the Soviet Union cuts off all traffic and water to West Berlin, hoping that the Allie will give up West Berlin. In order for supplies to get into West Berlin, American and British planes are flying into West Berlin to give them supplies for 11 months, a plane landing every 3 minutes. After these 11 months, the Soviets lift the blockade.

    On May 14, 1948, David Ben-Gurion declares Israel as a state. The creation of Israel established the first Jewish state in 2,000 years. David Ben-Gurion became the first premier of Israel.

    Israeli armed forces went into Egypt going after the Suez Canal. The Israelis were joined by French and British forces bringing the Soviets into the mix.

    In 1962, a U.S. spy plane discovered that the Soviets were building secret missilesites in Cuba. With Cuba being only 90 miles away from the coast of the U.S.state, Florida, the U.S. saw these missile sites as a threat. The U.S. demanded the removal the the missile sites and blocked Cuba off from the Soviets. The U.S. used a nuclear was as a threat and because of that, the Soviet Union agreed to remove the missiles as long as the U.S. did not invade Cuba.

    When Communist Party General Secretary, Hu Yaobang, died, protests began. Universtiy studends went to Tiananmen Square to protest. One of their goals was to get social equality.

    Anwar Sadat was assassinated during the anual victory parade in Cairo to celebrate Operation Badr. He was burried in the Unknown Soldier Memorial in Cairo.

    East Germans traveled to West Germany, then East Germany closed all of its borders. Protests began and becasue of that, the leader of East Germany tried to restore stability by allowing people to leave which resulted in the collapse of the Communist Party.
