Prohibition is Proposed
The Womens Christian Temperance Union pushed for the amendment saying it would lead to less abuse in the family. -
The States Ratify the 18th Amendment
Enough State Legislatures passed the 18th amendment. The 36th state, Utah, passed the prohibition amendment to the constitution. -
Prohibition Begins
Following the ratification of the amendment, prohibition begins and the manufacture, sale and distribution of alcholic beverages is banned. You can still drink what you had at your disposal. The amendment did not state you couldn't drink alcohol. -
Bootleggers
During prohibition people still wanted their alcohol, but it was too risky to get it yourself. The solution? Bootleggers. These armed men and women drove modified cars delivering alcohol and outrunning the cops. -
Organised Crime begins
Al Capone in Chicago, Tom Dennison in Omaha and many other people across the nation begin there legacy controlling the alcohol flow into cities. These men made hundreds of thousands of dollars from there criminal enterprises. They would do anything to get alcohol where they wanted it to go. -
The Volstead Act
On January 17th the law that enforces the 18th amendment was created that provides consequences for breaking the ban on alcohol. -

When Prohibition was introduced, I hoped that it would be widely supported by public opinion and the day would soon come when the evil effects of alcohol would be recognized. 21st amendment proposed
In Febuary Congress proposed the end of prohibition. As more and more Americans favored the end of prohibition the support grew in Congress. The governmnet also saw this as a chance to make money because the country was flat broke. -
The 21st Amendment is ratified
On December 5th, the 21st amendment was ratified ending prohibition. Some states still went "dry" for many years to come -
Mississippi officially ratifies the 21st
Mississippi finally ratifies the 21st amendment to the constitution. It was one of the last "dry" states in the country. -
Kansas lifts ban on public bars
Until 1987 Kansas had a ban on public bars in state lines. The state legislature finally voted to lift the ban and suceeded. -
South Dakota v. Dole
The Supreme Court upheld some federal highway funds from South Dakota because people could buy alcohol under the age of 21 in the stste.
