    In the month of January Civil Rights Leaders Martin Luther King Jr and Fred Shuttlesworth and others worked together to begin planning filling Birmingham Jails to end segregation in Birmingham. (This date is not specific it is just a random day in the month)

    A Town of Two Governments
    Albert Boutwell is elected mayor of Birmingham. However "Bull" Conner and other officials refused to leave office. Birmingham Government erupts in chaos. No work is conducted because the two governments oppose each other
  • Project C Erupts

    Project C Erupts
    Civil Rights Leaders begin Project C, the plan to fill the jails, College students hold protests, sit-ins, marches, and pickets. People apply for permits to protest.
  • "Points For Progress"

    "Points For Progress"
    The ACMHR issued their "Points For Progress" to the Birmingham Government. African American Churches began holding nightly mass meetings.
  • Marching For Freedom

    Marching For Freedom
    Several Civil Rights Leaders, including King, march and are thrown in jail. Reverend James Bevel begins to encourage kids to protest segregation.

    Project C almost fails. Few adults are marching and even fewer are arrested. Jails aren't even close to being filled.
  • D-Day

    James Bevel was successful in organizing children protests!!!!! Hundreds of school aged African American kids leave schools and meet at the 16th Street Baptist Church to get ready to march. They exit 2 by 2 50 every 20 minutes or so. Hundreds are jailed.

    Double D-Day
    Once again hundreds of children march. Bull Conner calls in Police and Fire Depts. . Kids are sprayed with high pressure hoses and attacked by dogs as they exit the church. Hundreds are arrested, and some are injured. Onlookers turn violent and marches are ceased for the day. Still more continue to march each day..

    Kids fill downtown Birmingham protesting, marching, picketing, etc.. Their mission: confuse police. Fred Shuttlesworth is hosed. Negotiators work day and night to work out differences between Civil Rights Leaders and Birmingham Govt.
