  • Virginia founded

    Virginia founded
    Upon hearing that Spain and France had found gold in North America King James created the colony of Virginia to find gold as well. It was lead by John Smith
  • Maryland founded

    Maryland founded
    King Charles gave a large piece of land to George Calvert. He hoped to create a colony where people could enjoy religious freedom. However he died before he established the colony so the land was given to Cecilius Calvert his son.
  • Rhode Island founded

    Rhode Island founded
    Roger Williams believed that puritan leaders should not tell others how to act. He thought that religion and government should be seperate so he was banished. That Winter he lived with A native american tribe the next spring he purchased land from the tribe and founde Rhode Island
  • New Hampshire

    New Hampshire
    Some colonists were unhappy with puritan laws and teaching so they decided to leave the colony and create thier own. This colony was lead by Fernando Gorges and later by John Mason
  • Connecticuit

    Connecticuit
    Thomas Hooker believed that religion and government should be kept seperate so he decided to lead about 100 colonists to another area witch he called New Hampshire
  • New York founded

    New York founded
    After seizing control of New Amsterdam King Charles gave this land to his brother the Duke of York. Charles named this colony New York to honor his brother.
  • Delaware founded

    The Duke of York propeterior of New york gave William Penn some more land. For a few years this land was part of the colony of Pennsylvania but later it became the colony of Delaware. This colony was lead by William Penn even though they were there own colony.
  • Pennsylvania founded

    Pennsylvania founded
    William Penn was a Quaker. He belived that all people should be equal and he thought that the colonies would be a perfect for that expirement. King Charles had owed Penn's family money however Penn's father had died so Charles gave some land in the colonies to Penn.
  • Massachusetts founded

    In Massachusetts Bay only men who funded the colony were allowed to help run the colony however the settlers became angry and eventually leaders allowed the settlers an oppurtunitiny to speak but only church members were allowed to vote in political matters. The settlers complaints strained their relation ship with England so in 1691 the colonies of Massachusetts Bay and Plymouth formed the colony of Massachusetts
  • New Jersey founded

    The Duke of York also gave some of his land to his two friends John Berkeley and George Carteret. Until 1702 these two kept thier colonies. These colonies were called East Jersey and West Jersey seperate but in 1702 they joined together to form New Jersey.
  • South Carolina

    Like North Carolina, South Carolina was founded because King Charles wanted to keep Spain and France out of the colonies. But because the southern grew more quickly the colony was seperated into two. South Carolina was lead by eight different english investors.
  • North Carolina founded

    King George wanted to keep Spain and France out of the colonies so he created the colony of Carolina. However the northern area of the new colony did not grow as fast as the south and so, in 1729 the colony was split into two. North Carolina was lead by eight seperate lord propeteriors.
  • Georgia founded

    King George wanted another colony to keep Spain and France out of the area, so he gave a piece of land between the spanish province of Florida and South Carolina to James Oglethorpe. He planned to create a place for poor people and debtors to earn money.
