Tension bewteen Texas and Mexico
FEB 1, 1823 – FEB 1, 1828
Foreign settlers were invited in to help develop the land and its resources. By about 1830, American settlers outnumbered Mexican citizens. Americans wanted slaves, and the use of other U.S. principles. That angered Mexico, who was in charge of Texas.
Later, American settlers illegally occupied the mission station at The Alamo and claimed it as part of the USA. -
Battle of Gonzales
The beginning of the Texas Revolution. Dictator of Mexico Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna tried to disarm to Texans. -
Battle of Goliad
Sam Houston feared another disaster could befall his Texas Army. Mexican forces continued to sweep across Texas toward Fort Defiance. 400 man force was evacuated from Goliad to Victoria. -
The Alamo
Thousands of Mexican soldiers began a siege of the fort. Two hundred men defended against the Mexicans for 13 days before being overpowered. -
Texas Declared Independence
Texas wanted to join the U.S., but the U.S. opposed its admission. For almost 10 years, Texas was its own independent republic. Sam Houston was the first elected president. Texas was the 28th state to join the Union in 1845. -

An independent sovereign country in North America that existed from March 2, 1836, to February 19, 1846. -
Battle of San Jacinto and the Treaty of Velasco
Texas militia under Sam Houston launched a surprise attack against Mexican General Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna'S troops at the Battle of San Jacinto. Santa Anna was taken prisoner, but was later freed after he signed a treaty recognizing Texas’ independence. -
Texan Annexation
President Martin van Buren waited 8 years before restarting negotiations with the Republic of Texas. The Treaty of Annexation wasn't passed, but the next time it was, and Tez=xas was added to the U.S.
