The main reasons were to spread religion, discover new sea routes, and finding riches. Columbus was looking for a sea passage. Most of these explorers were from Italy, Spain, France, and Asia. Many were conquistadors, a conquistador is a conqueror. The explorer who founded new Spain was Cortes. -

Pineda maps Texas Coast
Pineda had lead many expeditions to map the western coastlines of the Gulf of Mexico. The map of the Texas coastline, was the first document in Texas history. -
Jan 1, 1527
Cabeza de Vaca shipwrecks
When Cabeza de Vaca shipwrecked, he encountered either the Atakapans or the Karankawas. Disease and hunger killed many of both the Indians and the crew. As stories spread, the last four survivors, including Cabeza de Vaca, were treated as honored guests. -

Coronado sets out for Cibola
Cibola is a fabled seven cities made completely out of gold. The stories from Cabeza de Vaca's expedition led Cornado to believe that the seven cities of Cibola were in Texas. It turned out that there were no seven cities of gold. Determined to not go back empty handed, he eventually found the Grand Canyon. -
La Salle lands in Texas
The French challenged Spain for Texas. La Salle found the Mississippi River delta. -
Fort St. Louis founded
Fort St. Louis is near Arenosa Creek and Matagorda Bay, Texas. It was founded by a french explorer named La Salle. They had trouble finding shelter and failed to grow enough food. La Salle killed by his own men. -
Mission San Francisco founded
The purpose of the mission was to convert indians into catholic spainish citizens. The friars were in charge. Spain built missions. All missions were ment to spread catholicism. Most of the missions failed. People died in the missions mainly because of disease. Presidios had protected the missions. -
Marques de Rubi Inspects Texas
Rubi's mission was to report on the state of the missions in Texas. The Spanish king sent rubi with his mission. The recommidations were to pull back from Texas and build a line of fort from calafornia to Texas. -
Philip Nolan expedition
A filibuster is a person who wants an unofficial war on a country. Two other filibusters are James Wilkinson and Augustus Magee. Jean Lafitte was a French pirate who wanted Texas to secede from Mexico. -
Louisiana Purchase
After the purchase, the territory of America touched Spain's territory. Britain, Spain, and France still owned part of America. -
Moses Austin Asks Permission for Colony
Moses Austin got the land grant because he would not give up. Before that he got rejected multiple times. Before even that he got bank rupt. -
Mier y Teran Report
The purpose of the report was to see the mexican influence on Texas, Meir y Teran was sent because he was a mexican general that they sent so he could check out Texas. His reccomidations were to increase trade, more soldiers should be sent to Texas, and to encourage more Spanish and European settlement. -
Stephen F. Austin Establishes His Colony
An emmpresario is the person who started the colony. SFA started his colony in Texas. His people in his colony needed to be loyal to the spanish government and be catholic. The "Old 300" were the original angelo families who were SFA's colony. Some of the people in the colony were not following the requirments. Two other emmprisarios are David G. Burnet and Martín De León. -
Fredonian Rebellion
The purpose was for the Texans to secede from Mexico. Edwards didn't like different the race other than his own. This rebellion made the Mexicans be overboard superstitious about America taking Texas. -
Law of April 6, 1830 passes
U.S. immigration was banned, emmpresario contracts were put under federal control, Mexicans were encouraged to move towards central Texas, no new slaves were allowed, new forts watched over the immigration, and import taxes increased. -
Convention of 1833
The purpose was to write the state constitution. Stephen F. Austin made the trip to Mexico City to present the resolutions to the Mexican government. -
Austin Arrested
SFA was aressted because of the overflowing suspision of the growing rebellion of Texas. After the arrest, SFA changed his mind about the Mexican Government, he is now among the Texan rebellion. -
The Alamo Falls
David Crackett, James Bowie, and William B. Travis were famous people who fought in the battle of the Alamo. There were about 600 texan soldiers and about 3,100 men were in the Mexican army. Sam Houston did not send reinforcements because he knew even if he did they would lose and then Texas would never be independent. The Mexican Army won the battle of the Alamo. -
Battle of Gonzales
This battle was fought over a canon that the Mexicans gave Texas but came to take back. The Texans won. The important slogan was "Come and Take it!" -
San Antonio de Bexar Siege
A seige when a group is surrounded by and enemy force until the group is ready to surrender or is dead because hunger. The Mexican government owned San Antonio before the seige. After the seige, Texas gained controll of San Antonio. -
Mexico gains Independence
Mexico gained independence from spain. Spanish Constitution of 1824 was the consitution for Mexico. Texas was joined with Coahuila y Tejas. -
The Runaway Scrape
Everyoe were moving east during this time. Everyone was running away from Santa Anna because they were not ready to fight. People thought Sam Houston was a coward for not just standing up and fighting. -
Convention of 1836
the Texas Declaration of Independence and the Texas Consitution was developed in the convention. -
Goliad Massacre
Battle of Refugio was the battle when Fannin and his men lost to be taken prisoner. Sant Anna is the one who ordered to masscre Fannin's men. Fifty-five men were killed. -
Battle of San Jacinto
The two famous battle cries were "Remember the Alamo" and "Remember Goliad!" 630 Mexican soldiers died and only 9 Texans died. Santa Anna had tried running away. The Texans won the battle and independence.
