The Battle of the Alamo.
The battle of the Alamo was a famous battle in San Antonio, Texas between the Mexican Army and the group of people living in Texas at that point. It started when the Mexicans shot a cannon at the Alamo and then asked for it back. The Texans got mad and gave them a pile of garbage instead. The Mexicans won the first time and then Sam Houston yelled remember the Alamo and the Texans won once and for all. -
Texas Becomes a State!
On December 29, 1845 president James K. Polk signed the document of Texas statehood. Texas was the 28th state to enter the union this was Polk’s 1st state to approve in his reign of presidencies. At that time Texas was a very big state but after Oklahoma, Colorado, and Kansas entered the union it decreased to the size it is nowadays. -
The University of Texas in Austin is Founded.
The University of Texas in Austin was founded 1885. It has the fifth largest student body in the nation. The university has seven museums and seventeen libraries on the campus. The athletes at the University of Texas compete in the Big 12 Conference. -
The Texas State capitol building was opened to the public.
The Texas State Capital Building was opened to the Public on April 12, 1888. It is located in Austin, the capital of Texas. The building houses the Texas Legislature and he office of the Governor. The architect Elijah E. Meyers designed it. The style of architecture is the Italian Renaissance Revival. -
Oil is Discovered at Spindletop
At Spindletop on January 10, 1901 oil was discovered. Spindletop is a salt dome in the southernmost part of Beaumont, Texas it is now a place where some of the most well known oil companies including Gulf Oil and Texaco, drill their oil. No other oil field in the world has been as productive. -
NASA opened the Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston.
The Manned Spacecraft Center in Houston now known as the Johnson Space Center, opened to the public on July 4, 1962. For more than thirty years it has been the leader in human space flight operations for NASA. The work there includes training astronauts and developing and producing Space Shuttle orbiters. -
Pres. John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas.
On November 22, 1963, President John F. Kennedy was assassinated in Dallas TX. Lee Harvey Oswald shot the president while he and his wife, Jacqueline, and Governor Connally and his wife, Nellie, were driving in a Presidential motorcade through Dealey Plaza in downtown Dallas. The shots killed Kennedy and wounded the Governor of Texas. -
Pres. Lyndon Johnson signs the Civil Rights Act
On July 2, 1964 President Lyndon B. Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act. It was a legislation that outlawed dicrimanation against racial, ethnic, national, and religous minorities and women. President Kennedy had been working to pass this law. Johnson told Congress that nothing could honor PResident Kennedys memory than the passage of the Civil Rights Act. -
Houston Astrodome, the worlds first domed sports stadium opened.
April 9, 1965 is the date that the Houston Astrodome, the first domed sports stadium in the world, opened to the public. It is the home to the baseball team the Houston Astros, and the football team the Houston Oilers. Many famous rock bands have performed there also. It is now called the Reliant Astrodome. -
George W. Bush, governor of Texas, became the 43rd Presient of the United States.
On January 20, 2001 George W. Bush, the former governor of Texas, Became the 43rd President of the United States. He deafeted Al Gore in a very controversial election. The final decision came down to the state of Florida, where Bush’s brother Jeb was governor. There were problems with the counting of the ballots, and some still believe that his winning was not correct.
