The rough riders were a regiment of the National Guard overseen by Franklin Roosevelt. These guardsmen were trained and sent to Cuba during the Spanish-American war. They won an important victory at Kettle Hill which led to the surrender of the Spanish Army. -

New Reclaimation Act
This act required that water users repay construction costs from which they received benefits. This was necessary when the government took responsibility for irrigation projects. They believed that irrigation would cause more people to settle in the west. Theodore Roosevelt supported the reclamation movement. -

The Elkins Act was a 1903 federal law that amended the Interstate Commerce Act of 1887. The act prohibits railroad companies from giving rebates to businesses that ship large quantities of goods and giving power to those businesses to artificially lower shipping prices. In 1906, the Meat Inspection Act was passed by Theodore Roosevelt. The Act required that all livestock be inspected before and after slaughtering. It also required that all meat be properly labeled and processed in sanitary conditions. The law also applied to imported meats. -
