TR the Rough Rider at San Juan Hill

Jul 1, 1898

Teddy served in the Navy. In one battle, he led a series of charges up Kettle Hill towards San Juan Heights on his horse, Texas, while the Rough Riders followed on foot. He rode up and down the hill encouraging his men with the orders to "March!" He killed one Spaniard with a revolver salvaged from the Maine. Other regiments continued alongside him, and the American flag was raised over San Juan Heights

TR Being Named President for the First Time

Theodore Roosevelt's being named president for the first time was significant because he was the youngest president. He was not voted in either, Mckinley got assassinated and that's how he became the twenty-sixth president

This act made it illegal for railroad companies to offer rebates to high-volume shippers. It was made to stop giving power to businesses that artificially lower shipping prices.

Yosemite under Federal Control

May 15, 1903

In 1903, President Theodore Roosevelt visited Yosemite and was guided by naturalist John Muir. Their conversations and shared joy with the beauty and magnificence of Yosemite led Roosevelt to expand federal protection of Yosemite, and it inspired him to sign into existence five national parks, 18 national monuments, 55 national bird sanctuaries, and wildlife refuges, and 150 national forests.

TR and the Northern Securities Case

1904

The Northern Securities Case which established President Theodore Roosevelt’s reputation as a “trust buster,” reached the Supreme Court in 1904. It was the first example of Roosevelt’s use of anti-trust legislation to dismantle a monopoly, in this case, a holding company controlling the principal railroad lines from Chicago to the Pacific Northwest.

Meat Inspection Act

This act prohibited the sale of adulterated or misbranded livestock and derived products as food and ensured sanitary slaughtering and processing of livestock.

Passage of Pure Food And Drug Act

This law made it mandatory that food be inspected by the government to ensure its safety. It improved medical care for people sickened by unsafe food.
