    On October 1, 1890, an act of Congress creates Yosemite National Park, home of such natural wonders as Half Dome and the giant sequoia trees. This marked the first time the U.S. government protected land for public enjoyment and it laid the foundation for the establishment of the national and state park systems.

    Named President when McKinley is assassinated
    On September 14, McKinley died from gangrene that had gone undetected in the internal wound. Vice President Theodore Roosevelt was immediately sworn in as president.
  • Coal Strike

    Coal Strike
    This was a strike by the United Mine Workers of America in the anthracite coalfields of eastern Pennsylvania. Miners striked for higher wages, shorter workdays, and the recognition of their union. Roosevelt attempted to persuade the union to end the strike with a promise that he would create a commission to study the causes of the strike and propose a solution, which Roosevelt promised to support with all of the authority of his office.

    This federal law was passed in response to public demand that the monopolies of the railroad companies and their operations be regulated. In the original Interstate Commerce Act, railroads could be punished for giving a rebate but if shippers asked for a rebate it was was not deemed to be a criminal act.

    Roosevelt and his expeditionary party leave New York for Africa. From there, Roosevelt and his party travel through British East Africa, the Belgian Congo, and Sudan. March 14, 1910. The expedition ends its trip in Khartoum, Sudan, having acquired thousands of natural specimens.
