Named President when McKinley is assassinated
President William McKinley was shot at the Pan-American Exposition in Buffalo, while his Vice President, Theodore Roosevelt, was in Vermont at a speaking engagement. Over the next eight days, McKinley’s health condition varied until he died on September 14. This resulted in Theodore Roosevelt being the new President.

Energy Crisis
A great strike in the anthracite coal fields of Pennsylvania threatened a coal famine. Roosevelt held a meeting in the white house in panic over the coal strike. He feared riots and social wars that would create misery.

Elkins Act Passed
The Elkins Act gave federal courts the power to end rate discrimination. This was urged to be passed by he Pennsylvania Railroad, Elkins presented the bill to the senate and won with a 205 to 6 vote in the house.

Pelican Island
Florida named first national wildlife refuge. President Theodore Roosevelt established the first national wildlife refuge on March 14, 1903 at Pelican Island, Florida, to protect brown pelicans there from slaughter by market hunters.

Yosemite under Federal Control
President Theodore Roosevelt visited Yosemite and was guided by naturalist John Muir. Their conversations and shared joy with the beauty and magnificence of Yosemite led Roosevelt to expand federal protection of Yosemite, and it inspired him to sign into existence five national parks, 18 national monuments, 55 national bird sanctuaries and wildlife refuges, and 150 national forests.

Wins first full term as President

Pure Food and Drug Act
The Pure Food and Drug Act of 1906 prohibited the sale of misbranded or adulterated food and drugs in interstate commerce and laid a foundation for the nation’s first consumer protection agency, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA). This was necessary in order to protect the public.

Roosevelt Leaves presidency, visits Africa
Theodore Roosevelt left his presidency and visited africa on the The Smithsonian–Roosevelt African Expedition. He began to hunt animals while on his expedition which lasted two years. When he returned he got back into politics.
