    While McKinley was shaking hands with the public, he was shot in the abdomen twice by Leon Czolgosz. 8 days later (September 14) he died from gangrene, his body tissues were dying from the gunshot wounds. Considering Roosevelt was Vice President, when McKinley died, Roosevelt was declared President.

    The United Mine Workers went on strike because they wanted higher wages, shorter workdays. The strike threatened to shut down the winter fuel supply.

    Elkins Act Passed
    Senator Stephen B. Elkins of West Virginia introduced a bill at the commant of the Pennsylvania Railroad. The bill was passed and signed by Teddy Roosevelt.

    First National Wildlife refuge in the United States established by Teddy Roosevelt. It was created to protect birds during hunting seasons. It is the first federal bird reservation.

    Roosevelt had a private tour of Yosemite with John Muir. Muir was talking to Roosevelt about the conservation that got a hold of Roosevelt's attention. Roosevelt then invited Muir to a three day camping trip in the park. Teddy later signed the American Antiquities Act of 1906 to put Yosemite's Valley under federal protection.

    Pure Food And Drug Act
    One of the first consumer protection laws. This prevented products being sold that could be mis-branded and poisonous, such as meat and pharmacy drugs. The meat was dirty and filled with disease. The drugs used to make you "feel better" are drugs that are extremely harmful and addicting today. There were no labels nor ingredients on the medicines you were buying before 1907.

    Roosevelt set out for Africa to hunt big game. He went across British East Africa. He got over 1,000 specimen, and 500 big animals. Theodore and his son killed 517 beasts, 17 lions, 11 elephants, and 20 rhinoceros. He was in Africa for about a year and returned back in America in June, 1910.

    Also known as the Progressive Party. It was a third-political party formed by Theodore Roosevelt after he lost to the Republican Party, making William Howard Taft president.
