The birth of the National Teachers Union of 1857 united teachers for the benefit of education. Everything from the conditions that the teachers work in to the to the settings in which students learn is handled by the now NEA (National Education Association). This organization allowed for teachers to unite for the common good and bring awareness to issues involving the education system. -
The National School Lunch Act
The National School Lunch Act expanded access to school lunches by offering low cost or free lunches to students who come from low income backgrounds. This was essential to the American education system because many students who could not afford lunch likely could not focus on learning if they were hungry. The impact of available lunches changed the way students were able to learn. -
Brown v. Board of Education
The ruling that "separate but equal" is very unequal is one of the most important notions related to the history of public education. Despite the massive resistance to the ruling, Brown v. Board of Education paved the way for equal opportunity education. Previously, segregation limited educational and mental development for all races alike. Racially integrated schools have been shown to increase African American’s test scores and increase total cultural education for all students. -
The National Defense Education Act
After the launch of Sputnik, the first Soviet satellite, the NDEA (National Defense Education Act) was signed into law. The government's choice to allocate $1 billion to provide federal funding to bolster science, math, and foreign language developments shifted the way Americans thought and learned about science, technology, engineering, and math. This allowed for more interest in furthering our country technologically for the greater good of all the people. -
