The Birth of Modern Computing in the 70s

  • Portable Calculator

    The first prototype was created by Jack Kilby in 1967.The first commercially produced portable calculator appeared in Japan of the year 1970. Before this, calculators required heavy machinery, and hundred of transistors.
  • Fiber Optics

    In 1970 Corning Glass announced the creation of a glass fiber so clear it could be used to communicate pulses of light. This was invented by Thomas Mensah. This lead GTE and AT&T to experiment with transmitting image, and sound data. This transformed the communications industry.
  • Microprocessor

    The world's first general microprocessor came about in November of 1971. This processor was called the Intel 4004. The progression of microprocessors since have rendered other types of computers obsolete. This was certainly a jumpstart for technology to further take off. The inventors of the Microprocessor consists of a team of engineers. Their names are Marcian Hoff, Federico Faggin, Masatoshi Shima, and Stanley Mazor.
  • VHS Tapes

    The VHS was created by Victory Company of Japan (JVC). VHS tapes became the main source of home media use in the late 70s. This invention now seems outdated but it truly changed the economics of television, and the movie business.
  • Atari

    The 1970s marked the beginning of the video game era. Atari was established by Nolan Bushnell, and Ted Dabney as the dominant force in home gaming. People were able to play the arcade game, Pong, from their own home. Now that game seeing extremely basic and boring, but it was a groundbreaking start.
