  • Wall Mounted Telephones

    Wall Mounted Telephones
My earliest memory of a telephone is having a big ugly one mounted on the wall. It looked exactly like this picture except it was whiter.
  • Cordless Phones

    Cordless Phones
I don't remember when my family made the transition but I do remember that it was a big deal. You could walk around with the phone! No more having mom shoo us away from the kitchen because she wanted privacy on the phone.
  • My First Cassette Tape

    My First Cassette Tape
On a parent-daughter date to the mall I was allowed to buy one thing. My dad took me to the music store and I bought my very own cassette tape. No Doubt's Tragic Kingdom. Looking back, I have no idea how an 8 year old kid knew about No Doubt. Maybe I just liked the picture on the front?
  • Discman

    Discman
My brother got a discman on year for either his birthday or Christmas. We were all so envious and we would all take turns with it. I have distinct memories of being in the car on road trips and fighting over whose turn it was. I would listen to my NOW! CD on it over and over and feel so cool.
  • Cell Phone

    Cell Phone
I distinctly remember being in junior high when cell phones became ubiquitous. All my friends were getting them but my parents wouldn't let me have one. My mom had a Nokia and I loved to steal it and play snake.
  • Flip Phones

    Flip Phones
When I started driving my parents decided to get me a cell phone. I think it was my junior year of high school. It was a flip phone that had limited texting. If I went over my limit of texts per month it cost money and my parents were very upset.
  • The iPod

    The iPod
The iPod was released in late 2001 but I don't really remember them being popular among my friends until late high school early college. Did I have one? No. Did I want one? Yes. My family tends to be behind in the technology trends and my parents weren't big believers in spending unnecessary money. I very vividly remember my dad complaining about students walking around BYU campus with their headphones in all the time which I think deterred him from ever buying us iPods.
  • Smart Phones

    Smart Phones
iPhones were released in 2007 but again, I don't remember friends having smart phones until much later. 2010 maybe? My first smartphone was very simple. It could call, text (unlimited!) and take poor quality pictures. I knew that you could access the internet and music but still struggled to figure it out.
  • Digital Camera

    Digital Camera
For Christmas my mom got me a digital camera. I had aspirations of traveling a lot and the way everyone was taking pictures was on digital cameras that you then could upload to the computer with a cord. I took a trip to DC the following year and took a tour of the White House. You weren't allowed to bring in cameras and I remember having to ask a hotel if they would keep it for me so I could take my tour. Oh, how times have changed!
  • My Own iPhone

    My Own iPhone
In 2014 (I think?) I got my first iPhone. I could finally figure out how to fully access the internet and take pictures and listen to music and all the things I had have separate devices for were now truly in the palm of my hand. Like I said, I'm always behind the times.
