1981 - The first personal computer
IBM created the first personal computer which drastically impacted the way businesses operated and the ability for the average consumer to be able to directly interact with the power of a computer. -
1983 - The CD ROM is invented
Philips and Sony invented the CD ROM format. They were a spin off from the compact disc but were standardized so that any computer could read the data on the disc. This exponentially increased the quantity of data that could be readily transported. -
1985 - Nintendo is invented
Nintendo, a Japanese company, released the "Nintendo Entertainment System" which revolutionized the gaming industry and became the foundation upon which the high-tech online gaming that we have today was built. -
1987 - Larry Wall invents the Perl language
Still used today, the Perl language was meant to perform report processing, scanning and extraction. It became much more than that, serving as a connection between otherwise disparate systems and languages. It holds together the various sources and systems that combine to create the internet experience we have today. -
1989 - The internet becomes legitimate
There is no one invention date of the internet. Different concepts and iterations of the the connected network can be traced back for more than a century. There is no one inventor of the internet. Many computer scientists and engineers have contributed to the underlying concepts. In 1989, the Internet had grown to 100,000 host machines. It went from an academic experiment to the main player of networks.
