The UNIVAC 1
On June 14, 1951, J. Presper Eckert and John Mauchly developed The UNIVAC (Universal Automatic Computer) the first electronic digital computer. This was an updated version of ENIAC that would replace punch-cards. A fully automatic system that delivers faster solutions than the average person. We can get results faster to supply better operation results for the government, tabulating systems, and also predicted Dwight Eisenhower's victory in the presidential election. -
First patent for bar codes
Norman Joseph Woodland and Bernard Silver encountered the idea of bar codes from a suggestion from their local grocery store. They filed a patent application in 1949 and later accepted it in 1952. The barcode was in the shape of a bull's eye target with parallel circles to be scanned in any way. This provides a much more efficient method for businesses and stores to store, track and supply products to serve the community better. Faster services, faster supply, faster everything. -
First commercial hard disk
It was made in June 1956. IBM wanted to replace the punch cards and magnetic tape being used in computer applications with their development of a hard disk. It saved data on thousands of disks instead of printing, using tapes, and etc. All information was written and received on disks to provide better storage, functionality, and structure in the workplace. Their reliance was heavily on machinery to do all the computing and made working a lot easier for programmers and data collection. -
FORTRAN
Created in 1957 by John Bacus and his IBM team. FORTRAN (Formula Translation) helped scientists and mathematicians turn scientific formulas into code. It was much faster to learn, compute a variety of applications, and develop a more focused environment outside coding. We can tell a computer what to do and even today, as it is used beyond science, math, and engineering. Today it can be found in design, computer sciences, and lots more. -
Microchip
On February 6, 1959, Jack Kilby and Robert Noyce created the microchip. This revolutionalized the industry of electronics for its cost-effectiveness. They are the logical components or RAM chips inside computers, GPS tracking devices, and more. It has revolutionized into many different ways into society today where we can receive information in a matter of seconds. A microchip is essentially apart of every electronic device we own! In phones, computers, calculators, and many more.
