1994: World Wide Web
In 1994, one year after my birth, the world wide web took off. Because of this event in history, I have never known a moment of life without technology. Since I was born technology has been improving rapidly. I may not have been there for how it started, but I get to see where it is going. During my life, personal and educational, I have been/will always be able to browse the web. -
2000: AOL Dial up
During the summer of 2000, I used dial up (ISP) for the first time. I begged my mom to let me on the family desktop to play a cartoon video game on AOL. The sound of dial up is still burnt into my memory. Although I'm young, I still remember a time when you had to wait for the dial up to use the world wide web, and kick your family members off of the phone. In a few short years, this would no longer be the case. Image from: https://www.quora.com/Why-did-AOL-make-weird-sounds-1 -
2005: Smartboards
In the fall of 2005 during middle school my school received a grant for 5 boards, and my history teacher was one of the recipients. I saw my teacher use his board to annotate maps and diagrams, and make note taking slightly more fun. It was a reward for us to come write on the Smartboard. The technology has changed so much in the last 12 years, that I can take his great ideas one step further in my classroom on my own Smartboard. 2005: My First Cell Phone
Winter 2005 I received my first cell phone. It was a groundbreaking LCD screen, keyboard, with a whopping 30 MB memory, and a 3 hour battery life. This was during the phase of thin cell phone. Here I sit with my Iphone and with nearly triple the specifics. Cell phones once started off big and got smaller - now cell phones, and more specifically the screens, are getting larger each year. 2007: Youtube
Fall 2007
During English class my teacher put the projector on, and showed us a clip of a grammar video on Youtube. It was the first time I had seen an entertainment platform like Youtube used for education, and to reinforce a lesson. Following her supplemental use of Youtube, we created and published our own videos online. It opened my eyes as a student to the possibilities of the internet to reform traditional classroom education. Image from: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/YouTube -
2016: GAFE
Google has changed immensely from when I first saw it 2000-2001ish. In my first year teaching, I was introduced to GAFE and immediately knew I had to implement these in my classroom. GAFE allows for collaboration and technology skills that engage and challenge students. Integration of GAFE in the classroom allows me to become one step closer to being a paper free classroom.
