  • Flintlock

    Flintlock
Although not the first firearm to exist, flintlock weaponry dominated the European gun world after its initial creation by a French gunsmith serving under Louis the 13th. Flintlock weapons were typically pistols, as the breech loading design made it more difficult to load a longer barreled flintlock. Flintlock weapons were more effective than previous pistols and were also less dangerous, as the firing flint was already held in place by the weapon rather than requiring manual ignition.
  • Celsius temperature system

    Celsius temperature system
In 1742, Anders Celsius presented his idea for the celsius temperature system to the Swedish Academy of Sciences. Unlike the celsius scale of today, his thermometer had 0 as the boiling point and 100 as freezing, although this was reversed a year after his death in 1745. The celsius system is one of the most widely accepted forms of measurement in the modern world, being the standard of heat measurement in all nations except for the US and Belize.
  • Morphine

    Morphine
Although dangerous if abused, morphine was one of the most important battlefield medicines and is still used in some situations as a painkiller today. Morphine's significance was especially evident in World War II, where it was issued to soldiers as an effective painkiller. Morphine revolutionized battlefield medicine as its effects allowed for easier treatment of soldiers as they would not be going into shock from pain due to the easing effects of morphine.
  • DVD system

    DVD system
DVD (which may or may not be an acronym for digital video disc, industry leaders dispute if the letters DVD really stand for anything at all!) is a disc based storage system. While similar to CD in dimensions and operation, DVDs are capable of carrying much more data, causing a revolution in the video industry, shifting priority from VCR storage. DVD was not iniitially popular and competed with a smiliar disk technology, SD, but over the years, DVD triumphed and was the date storage standard.
  • Youtube

    Youtube
There are hundreds of internet start up companies every year, but few are as successful as YouTube. Created by three former PayPal employees, YouTube is a force for social interaction. While it is necessary for humorous viral videos and various entertainment sector videos, it is also an important force for global peace and change, as videos such as an uploaded clip of one of the Arab Spring rioters can reach great audiences, promoting awareness and activism.
