Technology of the 90's

  • Portable CD Players

    Portable CD Players
Portable CD players. Sony pioneered the portable CD players by introducing an “anti-skip” technology. This eventually replaced the bulky cassettes and made rewinding or finding your next track so much quicker. Typically, an album would play completely otherwise you’d have to stop and rewind the cassette to play your favorite song on repeat. With the portable CD players, we were finally able to play our favorite songs to exhaustion.
  • Sega Genesis

    Sega Genesis
Sega Genesis along with Sonic The Hedgehog. My first real gaming console. The 16bit graphics that are now used by indie developers for a retro look was cutting edge at the time. This platform was in the fourth generation of gaming consoles and introduced parallax scrolling to create a more immersive look.
  • Digital Video Disc

    Digital Video Disc
Digital Video Disc or DVDs and DVD players were released. Sony created the first DVD player. This changed how we consumed media drastically due to its better audio and video quality, and lifespan made the VHS obsolete. Long gone were the days of using a pencil to physically rewind the movie outside its player. This also saved a great deal of space in our living room as our shelves were covered in the bulky VHS tapes.
  • Playstation

    Playstation
Sony’s Playstation. I remember waking up Christmas morning in 1998 to the revolutionary Spyro The Dragon game. The graphics at the time were so amazing, everything felt so realistic in 32/64 bit. This generation of consoles introduced completely 3D polygon models in games. Superior audio that broke away from the synth feel of the 4th generation, and of course more buttons than their predecessors.
  • Tamagotchi

    Tamagotchi
Tamagotchi pets. Created by Akihiro Yokoi by Bandai. They were tiny key chained sized digital pets that would fit in your pocket. They’d start off as eggs and eventually hatch to little monsters. You can then take care of them by feeding, walking, or petting them. It was quite easy to have your pets die due to neglect, and being attached school children, led them getting banned in most public schools due to the disruptions they’d cause.
