Tech Timeline for 1975-1985

  • Apple 1 and 2 Computers

These computers released in 1976 and 1977 respectfully, and they were the first computers released by Apple. Designed by Steve Wozniak, they used a simple command line interface to control the computer. The Apple 2 allowed for more RAM to be used in the computer, and it had a stronger processing unit than it's predecessor.
  • Walkman

While we use digital recordings played back to us via our phones nowadays, back in 1979 they had the Walkman. With it, one could play a cassette anywhere in the world, at any time, provided one had the headphones. And with the walkman, Sony also released a new style of headphones that made listening to music a much more enjoyable experience.
  • Compact Discs (CDs)

Before this time, the only ways to record and play back music were casstees and records, both of which were very vulnerable to wear and tear. However, with the invention of the CD in 1983, those problems were done away with. They also could hold much more information on them, and they were more quite than any other medium at the time.
  • Camcorder

While the VCR and VHS had been around before this, the Camcorder was the first time that both those and a camera were combined into one machine. The camcorder allowed more people than ever to record their own home videos and opened up so many new paths of creativity for more people.
  • Macintosh and the Graphical User Interface (GUI)

The GUI was released in 1984 with the release of the Macintosh computer. A GUI is what people usually use when interacting with a computer; it's the pictures and methods you use to interact with your machine (ie. dragging and dropping items and double-clicking to open things). Before this, you had to use a command line interface (CLI) to do anything with a computer. The GUI allowed people to use the computer much more easily and opened the door to many new possibilities.
