    French and Indian War

  • Proclamation of 1763

    Forbade the American to settle west of the Appalachian Mountains. King George passed this proclamation to avoid getting into disputes with the Native Americans that fought alongside the French during the French and Indian war. The colonists payed no mind to this proclamation and felt resentment towards the King for passing this proclamation.
  • Sugar Act

    Law passed by the British Parliament that raised taxes on foreign sugars in the American colonies. Goal was to finish paying the expenses the colonies wasted during the French and Indian war. This law only encouraged the colonies to smuggle cheaper sugars in the colonies. "No taxation without representation" was introduced.
  • Quartering Act

    The British were no longer paying for the supply of the British soldiers in the American colonies. The act taxed the colonists to pay for the expenses of the soldiers.
  • Stamp Act

    Since the colonists were able to work around the Sugar Act, the British Parliament passed this act that taxed all paper items that involved legal documents, newspaper, and other necessities the colonists could not leave out. This tax outraged colonists and pushed them into forming the Sons and Daughters of Liberty.

  • Boston Massacre

    Group of colonists were throwing "snowballs" to a group of British guards that were guarding the Boston Customs house. Tension between them was already high. Colonists started attacking the guards and in defense, the guards fired shots, in result in killing 5 colonists. This massacre was turned in favor for the colonists in giving them another reason to dislike the British.
  • Committees of Correspondence

    The colonists held these meetings to communicate after they started conflicting with Great Britain. This was a sign of a unity between the colonies.
  • Tea Act

    The British Parliament passed a tax on other teas except for the East India Co..This company was in need of money. The East India Co. was a big source of income for Great Britain.
  • Boston Tea Party

    Group of colonists, led by Samuel Adams, dressed up as Mohawk Indians and boarded a British ship that was importing tea. They threw the tea overboard in protest of the Tea Act. This later on caused the Parliament to pass the Intolerable Acts.
  • Intolerable Acts

    Series of laws passed by the British Parliament to punish the American colonists for the Boston Tea Party and many other protests. These laws limited their use of the Port of Boston, stopped elections and town meetings, and made all colonial trials be under a British judge.

    Thomas Paine wrote this pamphlet to persuade the colonists to fight for the "unfairness" that the British Parliament was putting them in. It was written in very simple language for everyone to be able to read.

    An official document made in the Second Continental Congress that freed the colonies from Great Britain.
