Captain James Cook explored and mapped Australia and New Zealand. The reason why James cook is important to a shipwrecked family on the other side of the world is that they are both on boats and I guess that you can say that both Swiss family Robinson and Captain James Cook are explorers because James Cooks trade was exploring and Swiss family Robinson explored new Switzerland (the island they called home when they were shipwrecked). -

The Modern Rescue
The family was rescued by an English steam boat and in 1838 the first steam boats began there fleet across the Atlantic ocean. -
Ocean Monarch
The Ocean Monarch was an emigration boat sailing from Liverpool, U.K. to Boston, U.S.A. whilst off the coast of Llandudno, Wales it showed distress signals to land, minutes later the rear of the ship went up in flames. lots of passengers jumped overboard and many ran to the other end of the ship. the ships Queen of the Ocean and Affonso were in the area. Many people were saved by the two ships but sadly many people were not evacuated from the flames. the boat then later completely burnt and sank
