Rebellions in Upper and Lower Canada
+Lower Canada's rebellion was much more serious and extreme than upper Canada's.
+Lower canada's rebellion was led by Louis Joseph Papineau and his Patriotes.
+Upper Canada's rebellion was led by William Lyon Mackenzie, a newspaper publisher of scottish decent whom was a harsh critic of The Family Compact. -
Lord Durham's Report Is Issued
+In his report he reccomeneded that upper and lower Canada be joined into one.
+That they be given responsible government was also requested at this time.
+He wanted to force the french to give up their language and culture and become part of english canada, he planned to do this with the merger. -
Union Act
+This established one government and Legislature.
+The capital was first located in Kingston and later moved to Montréal, Toronto and Québec City before being permanently established in Ottawa in 1866. -
Rebellion Losses Bill
+A bill that proposed to use tax money for compensation to the people who in the rebellions lost property.
+Only offered in canada west even though the rebellions in canada east lasted longer and were more violent.
+A man by the name of Elgin signed the bill, later that same day his carrage was attacked by people pelting him with stones and rotten eggs.
+Two days of violence later the group set fire to the parliment buildings, they burned to the ground. -
New Brunswick
+the United States ended free trade
with the British North American
colonies, so New Brunswick goods
could no longer enter the united states
tax free.
+The Fenians attacked in 1866, the
people of new Brunswick were terrified
as a result the milita was called out.
The Attack caused people to vote in
favor of confederation.
+The railways would be paid for by the
government which took the weight off
of the people of NB. -
The British North America Act
+New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Canada agreed to confederation.
+British parlement passed the British North American Act, then the new dominion of Canada was created.
+Plans were made so that British Columbia along with the northwest would join confederation too. -
Nova Scotia
+Confederation made the economy stronger but they thought it would hurt the trade between the US and Nova Scotia.
+Ffishing, shipping and shipbuilding, agriculture, and natural resources such as timber were the industries, however manufacturing and the railway were becoming popular
+The region had a close trading relationship with New England, bacause of the Reciprocity Treaty.
+The colony was one of the first to be given responsible government, in 1848. Women couldnt vote. -
Ontario
+Also reffered to as Canada west.
+somethings that infuenced why the choice for confederation was made are the fenian raids and the manifest of destiny.
+Ontario joined confederation at the same time as Quebec. -
Québec
+Canada west is another name for Québec.
+Joining confederation got rid of the problem with double majority and made things easier.
+The french peoples felt as if the were being forced to let go of their culture and language so that they assimilate with the english speaking people. -
Manitoba
+To maintain cotrol over the fur trade, they created policies that limited the number of white settlers who could settle in the region. However, as of 1812, European immigrants settled in manitoba -
Northwest Territories
+Northwestern Territory and Ruperts land were baught by canada in the 1870 then the whole area was renamed Northwest Territories.
+Over the years land was taken away from the other provinces and territories and were added to Quebec and Ontario.
+Certian powers are not awarded to the territories. -
British Columbia
+On May 10th 1870 the three British Columbia delegates departed for Canada to make a deal
+Canada would absorb the British Columbia debt
+A railway would be built from Canada to British Columbia within 10 years or entry into Confederation -
Prince Edward Island
+the people who were against union claimed that joining with the other colonies would lead to excessive taxation,
+As incentive for joining they paid off PEI's debt for the railway as they were on the verge of financial collapse. -
Yukon
+No one wanted to stay in the Yukon after the gold rush beacause most all the resourses were depleted.
+The population only reached close to the gold rush levels when the Alaska highway was built, which was during the second world war. -
Alberta
+north and west of Manitoba was named the Northwest territories until 1905.
+almost completely english education.

Saskatchewan
+Once thought to be a desolate waste land unworthy of settlement.
+First nations started rebelling, the government used the railway to send troops to stop them.
+Federal government still controlled crown lands after joining confederation. -
Newfoundland and Labrodor
+in 1869,1888.1895 they tried to bring Newfoundland to confederation.
+The act creating Newfoundland and Labrodor into a province came to be just before midnight on March 31, 1949, the ceremonies that mark the occasion did not take place until April 1. -
Nunavut
+In the 1970's the federal government recognized the needs of the inuit people and created a seperate territory for them.
+The canadian government was doing all the negotiations with the inuit Tapirisat.
