Structuring a 100 Minute Math Lesson

  • Minds On

Begin the math lesson with a challenging concept or question that is just beyond student capability. Some students will complete the question, but most will struggle. Provide students with 10 minutes to work with this question, then provide the answer by introducing the new concept, the process, and the reasoning behind it. Students will follow along in their books so they have the notes for later in the lesson. Total: 15 minutes
  • Rotation 1

Students can choose from 1 of 3 stations:
    1. Number sense and numeration (BEDMAS, multiplication tables, etc.)
    2. Critical thinking puzzle (riddle, complex number problem, etc.)
    3. Challenging culminating problem of what students have completed thus far
During this time, the teacher is going around the class questioning students on their reasoning and debriefing their process. Total: 15 - 20 minutes
  • Action

The class returns their attention to the front where the teacher begins to remove the scaffold. The class will go through a question similar to the one originally introduced, but the students will work through it with the teacher. The teacher provides as minimal assistance as possible. Total: 10 minutes
  • Rotation 2

Students rotate to the numbered section following the one they had originally chosen. Total: 15 - 20 minutes
  • Action 2

The class returns to the front again, this time taking full agency over the question. The teacher will allow the students to make mistakes and will only correct them once students have gone through the question in full. This is the opportunity for students to learn from the mistakes they have made, and from the mistakes of others Total: 10 minutes
  • Rotation 3

Students will rotate to the final station they have not yet visited. Total: 15 - 20 minutes
  • Consolidation

The class will return to the front one final time where they will engage in a discussion with the class to determine their ability with this subject. During this debrief, students fill out an exit card explaining where they are comfortable and where they need more assistance. They are also provided with worksheets/handouts so they can practice their mathematical ability. Total: 15 - 20 minutes
