Stages of L1 Acquisition

  • Period: to

    Babbling Stage

The baby is an universal phonetician, he can produce sounds from any language. He starts playing with sounds to create a manual for his muscles, so they remember how to produce them.
  • Period: to

    One Word Stage

This period is called holophrastic because one word stands for a whole sentence. At this stage children are no longer universal phoneticians, they have set their minds to produce only their mother tongue's sounds.

  • Mommy!

    Mommy!
  • Period: to

    Two Word Strings

There is consistent vocabulary growth. Grammar appears, as the two words appear in the right grammatical order. For example "All dry" "baby sleep": Children can say when objects appear, disappear, reject and accept activities. There is more in children's minds that they say.
  • Two-word strings

  • Period: to

    Early Multiword Stage

Children learn a word every two hours. They utter 3 to 4 word sentences, function words appear, and they start overgeneralizing grammar rules. For example, they use ED for irregular verbs, as these verbs do not follow the logic of grammar in children's minds.
  • 3-4 word strings

    3-4 word strings
  • Period: to

    All Hell Breaks Loose!

This period is called the "Late Multiword Stage" because children start producing complex, embedded grammatical sentences, they rarely skip any function words, and they make almost no grammar mistakes. The length of the sentences increases steadily and they can be all day telling you about something.
  • Telling stories, talking about people.
