Erikson's Trust vs. Mistrust
During this stage, the infant is uncertain about the world in which they live. -
Freud's Oral Stage (0-1 Years)
Focuses on the development of the child’s mouth including breastfeeding, eating, and speech development. -
Freud's Anal Stage (1-3 Years)
Focuses on bowel and bladder control and the development of a child’s potty training. Encouragement and comfort from the parents are crucial during this stage. -
Erikson's Autonomy vs. Shame and Doubt
The child is developing physically and becoming more mobile. Between the ages of 18 months and three, children begin to assert their independence. -
Erikson's Initiative vs. Guilt
Begins around ages 3-5. These are particularly lively, rapid-developing years in a child’s life. During this period, the primary feature involves the child regularly interacting with other children at school. -
Freud's Phallic Stage (3-6 Years)
Children begin to notice the difference between males and females and begin to identify with the parent of their gender. This is usually the beginning of the "identity crisis" children experience as they begin to find themselves. -
Erikson's Industry (Competence) vs. Inferiority
Ages 5-12. Children are at the stage where they will be learning to read and write, to do sums, to do things on their own. This is when children begin to develop a sense of independence. -
Freud's Latency Stage (6-Puberty)
Children begin to develop sexual feelings, social skills, and values. Sexual feelings are not strong yet since puberty has not come into play. -
Erikson's Identity vs. Role Confusion
Occurs during adolescence (12-18 years). During this stage, adolescents search for a sense of self and personal identity. This is were the identity crisis is at an all-time high as children enter puberty. -
Freud's Genital Stage (Puberty-Adulthood)
Final stage of psychosexual development where individuals begin to develop strong sexual feelings towards the opposite sex and become warm, caring, and passionate members of society. -
Erikson's Intimacy vs. Isolation
Occurring in young adulthood (18-40 years). We begin to share ourselves more intimately with others. We explore relationships leading toward longer-term commitments with someone other than a family members. -
Erikson's Generativity vs. Stagnation
During middle adulthood (40-65 years). We establish our careers, settle down within a relationship, begin our own families and develop a sense of being a part of the bigger picture. -
Erikson's Ego Integrity vs. Despair
65+ years. We tend to slow down our productivity and explore life as a retired person. It is during this time we contemplate our accomplishments and can develop integrity if we see ourselves as leading a successful life. -
