Nasser closed the Straits of Tiran, stopping Israeli shipping. This outraged Israel. -
Assault on Egypt
Israel deploys troops in Egypt and defeats the Egyptians in 6 days. Israel then begins to occupy the Golan heights, Gaza, West bank and the Sinai peninsula. -
Restoring the peace
The United Nations Security Council creates Resolution 242. It establishes the ideal of exchanging territories gained in the 6 day war for peace with Israel. -
Nassers death and his successor
Gamal Nasser dies and is replaced by Anwar Sadat. Anwar eventually travels to Jerusalem to meet with Begin -
Yom Kippur war
The Yom Kippur war begins 3 years after Nasser's death. The war only lasted 20 days between Egypt and Israel. -
Shuttle diplomacy
The US Secretary of State in the 1970s Henry Kisinger begins Shuttle diplomacy between Egypt and Israel. -
The new Prime Minister
Menachem Begin is elected the Prime Minister of Israel. He was also the leader of the Likud party. -
Carter to the rescue
Sadat and Begin compromise at Camp David . This event was managed by Jimmy carter and helped him recive the Noble Peace Prize in 2002.
