Brown V. Board of Education
Brown v. Board is one of the most well known civil rights cases. The court deemed seperate but equal as unconsitutional which allowed for the integration of schools. This case is a basis for future legislation concerning children with disabilities and their acces to school.

Mills v. Board of Education of the District of Columbia
Mills v. Board also helped pave the way for the passage of IDEA. This case was calling for special education for all students with disabilities. The court found all students with a disability have the right to a public education that is free.

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act
This section guaranteed basic civil rights to all people with disabilities. It also required schools and society make accomodations for those with disabilities. This really helped lay the ground work for IDEA and ADA.

Education for All Handicapped Children (EHCA)
This act guaranteed a free appropriate education for those with disabilities. The most significant piece of this legislature is the introduction of Least Restrivitive Environment. Education must be given in the least restrictive environment.

Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA)
The ADA was landmark legislation. It barred discrimination in employment, transportation, public accommodations, and telecommunications. People can see the affects of ADA in every day life. This act has made the lives of those with disabilities better.

No Child Left Behind Act
No child left behind required that all schoolchildren participate in state and district testing. This affected schools across the nation. Now teachers would have to prepare students for standardized tests. The results of these tests affect school funding and evaluate teachers.

Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (reauthorized)
Reauthorized in 2004, the IDEA now required special education teachers to be highly qualified. It also mandated all students with disabilities participate annually in either state and district testing with accommodations or in alternative assessments.
