  • Earliest record of Special Education in the United States

    The earliest record of Special Education in the US was for students who were blind and/or deaf. This form of education took place at separate institutions, and was created as a form of charity.
  • ELL Students

    In the late 1800's through the early 1900's, classes were set up for students who did not speak English, were "delinquent", or were seen as "slow". These special classes focused very little on academics and predominantly on morals and ethics.
  • Required Schooling

    In the 1920's, education became mandatory for general education students. The law, however, did not require students with disabilities to attend school.
  • Brown V. Board

    The supreme court case Brown vs. Board of Education was a historical case that made racial segregation in schools illegal. This case influenced the desegregation of students with disabilities as well.
  • Mills V. Board

    The Mills vs. Board of Education case ruled it unlawful to deny students with disabilities access to publically funded education. This included students with behavioral, mental, and learning disabilities.
  • Congressional Investigation

    In 1972, congress found that less than half of students with disabilities were receiving an appropriate education. It was also found that about 1.75 million children with disabilities were receiving no education at all.
  • The Education for All Handicapped Children Act

    The Education for All Handicapped Children Act of 1975 required schools to provide appropriate schooling for all students with disabilities. This act has been strengthened and expanded on over the years.
  • Individuals with Disabilities Education Act

    The Education for All Handicapped Children Act was renamed to the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) in 1990. This act was reauthorized in 2004.

    Mary completes a Change of Degree Application and is accepted into NC State's College of Education. She is given the opportunity to work in a nearby elementary school classroom, which she loves.
  • Mary Adopts a Kitten

    Mary adopts a tuxedo kitten named Cleo from the Wake County SPCA. Cleo gets adjusted at her new home very quickly and Mary falls in love with her :)
