  • The first special education school April 15, 1817

    The first special education school April 15, 1817
    The American Asylum for the Education and Instruction of the Deaf and Dumb was the first special education school in the Unites States in Hartford, Connecticut in April 15, 1817. This school is now called The American School for the Deaf. Around this time, majority of children who were born deaf did not learn how to communicate.

    Horace Mann School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing was establish in July 28, 1869. This school is the oldest and first public school in America for the Deaf and hard of hearing. The school is located in Boston and is still available to serve children that are deaf and hard of hearing. Before the school was named Horace Mann School for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, it’s original name was the Boston School for Deaf Mutes.

    ARC was first establish in 1950 when a small group of people came together to share some of the similar concerns they had about intellectual disabilities. Around this time, there were no organizations in the communities to support the development of children and adults with intellectual disabilities.ARC work with children with different type of disabilities such as Down Syndrome, Fetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorder, and Autism.

    The Six Hour Retarded Child 1966
    The booklet “The Six hour Retarded Child” was published in 1964 by the Presidents’ Panel on Mental Retardation”. The study found that students were unfairly labeled as “Mentally Retarded” in school even though outside of school they functioned the same as their peers. The study also found that students were not being educated properly in during their time in school due to being labeled as “mentally Retarded”
