    Rehabilitation Act of 1973
    Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 protects students with disabilities from discrimination. It also mandates that appropriate services are provided.
  • Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)

    Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA)
    FERPA grants parents and guardians the right to access their child's school information and records. They can also request for inaccurate information to be amended in their child's record.
  • Education for All Handicapped Children Act (EAHCA)

    Education for All Handicapped Children Act (EAHCA)
    EAHCA is also known as Public Law (PL) 94-142. This law provided financial support to states to provide a free and appropriate public education to all children with disabilities. Rights of children with disabilities their parents were also protected under EAHCA. EAHCA served students with disabilities ages 3-21. This law was later renamed the Individuals with Disabilities Act.

    The EACHA was renamed IDEA. IDEA had a focused on transitioning students with disabilities to life after high school. Also, students were served in the least restrictive environment. This meant serving students in their neighborhood school as opposed to separate schools.

    ADA protects people with disabilities from discrimination in all areas of their life including school. ADA provides equal opportunities for people with disabilities in employment and public, government settings.

    NCLB made school accountable for the learning of all students grades K-12 schools through yearly testing. There was an emphasis on including disadvantaged students. NCLB was in effect from 2002-2015.

    IDEIA is IDEA reauthorized. IDEIA made individual states accountable for the learning of all students based on performance. This reauthorization also made data on how schools are implementing FAPE publicly available.

    The ESSA replaced NCLB. Under the ESSA students with disabilities are required to take yearly assessments that provide data. This data helps plan programs and instruction for students with disabilities.
