  • Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka

    Oliver Brown filed class action suit against Board of Education of Topeka because his daughter, Linda Brown, was not allowed entrance to an all white elementary school. Decision ruled in favor of Brown stating state sanctioned segregation of public schools was a violation of the 14th amendment and therefore was unconstitutional.
  • Mills vs. Board of Education

    Was a lawsuit filed in the District of Columbia by Peter Mills because children were being denied education because of both physical, mentally, and emotional disabilities. Decision ruled that children could not be denied public education because of mental, behavioral, physical, or emotional handicaps or deficiencies.
  • Vocational Rehabilitation Act- Section 504

    Is a National law under the civil rights provisions that protects and guarantees certain rights with qualified individuals against programs conducted by federal agencies, programs receiving federal funding or assistance. It also applies to to employment through federal contractors. Qualified individuals must have record of impairment or disability.
  • FERPA ( Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act)

    Federal law in the United States. The law applies to institutions that receive U.S. Department of Education funds providing privacy for rights to students 18 years and older. This law applies to educational agencies and institutions that receive funds under the departments of education. The parents have rights to have information disclosed before ethe child reaches the age of 18.
  • Public Law 94-142

    This is a law that obligates public schools receiving federal funds to give equal access to education and provide at least one free meal per day. This law applies to children with physical and mental disabilities.
  • ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) Title II

    This is the final regulation given to to the Americans with Disabilities Act that obligates state and local governments to provide individuals with disabilities equal opportunities to avoid discrimination from receiving benefit from all programs, services and activities given by the state and local governments or entities.
  • IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) Law

    Was the renaming of Education of All Handicapped Children Act to IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act). It is a law that has 6 components, it's to include the IEP (Individualized Education Plan). Free and Appropriate Public Education (FAPE), Least Restrictive Environment (LRE), Appropriate Evaluations, Parent and teacher collaboration, and Procedural Safeguards. These all together became the framework of IDEA.
  • IDEA (Individuals with Disabilities Education Act) Reauthorization

    Is the law that recognized the expansion of disabled children to include children with developmental delays between the ages 3-9. It enforced the parents to be a mediation for resolution of disputes with the schools and local education agencies. This also allows extra grants on technology, allows access to developmentally delayed infants and toddlers, parent training and professional developments for educators.
  • No Child Left Behind Act

    Is an Act of Congress reauthorizing the 1965 Elementary and Secondary Education Act where public schools were to focus on children who struggled because of learning disabilities. The children are to be given more support, attention and receive additional help to achieve promotion or graduation.
  • IDEA Improvement Act 2004

    Is the United States law giving authority to mandate equity, accountability and excellence in education of children with disabilities .
