    Am. School for the Deaf
    The American School for the Deaf was the first school for the deaf in the United States. The school specialized in providing care and education for students who are deaf or hard of hearing. It is an inclusive environment which welcomes and celebrates diversity. ASD strives to help children with each individual need, to grow into a lifelong learner.
  • Perkins School for the Blind

    Perkins School for the Blind
    Perkins School for the Blind was founded in 1829. It was the first school established for children or were blind or visually impaired. Much like the school for the deaf, the school for the blind strived to offer a specialized education and create equal opportunities for the blind.
    Originally named New England Asylum for the Blind.
  • Kanner and Autism

    Kanner and Autism
    In 1943, Leo Kanner published the first systemic description of early autism. Kenner described it has a neurodevelopmental disorder. This changed the way peopled viewed children who were 'different' or autistic. This also gave many children labels, but opened new doors for them.

  • Brown v. Board of Education

    Brown v. Board of Education
    After the Plessy versus Ferguson case, the idea was that people were 'separate but equal'. Brown versus the Board of Education overthrew that idea. The Brown's argued that segregation in the education system was not equal and unconstitutional. This led to schools becoming more included whether it be race, disability, etc. and no more segregation.
  • Elementary and Secondary Education Act

    Elementary and Secondary Education Act
    The act was used against the 'war on poverty.' President Johnson created the act to ensure schools would have sufficient funding for children with needs to close shorten the achievement gaps between students. This act was the beginning of the No Child Left Behind Act. ESEA has been revised over the years to better fit the needs of children.

    This law was created in 1973. It was created to prohibit discrimination against people with disabilities in public and private programs or programs that receive federal funding. This act ensures that all students will be accepted and receive federal money to ensure needs are met. Programs will ensure that students will have equal rights to be in an inclusion or least restrictive classroom to fully meet their needs.

    IDEA
    The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act was put in place to offer a free public education for children with disabilities and to ensure special education or related services. This act was created in 2014 and is nationwide. This purpose of this act is to ensure that all children with disabilities needs' are met. It creates a safe place for parents and families as well, by protecting their rights.

    Americans with Disabilities Act
    The Americans with Disabilities Act was created in 1992. This act was created to prevent discrimination against Americans with disabilities. This act covers not only the education field, but anywhere in American. ADA protects the rights of the disabled and allows them to have an equal opportunity.
  • Florida Statutes

    Florida Statutes
    Florida legislation passed statutes in 1999, pertaining to exceptional student education. The statutes ensure that each child is treated equally and specific to their special needs. The statutes ensure that any district or school not following the laws will be held accounted. Listed in the statutes are laws on specific needs, inclusion, discrimination, parent rights, child rights, etc. Laws are revised annually.

  • No Child Left Behind Act

    No Child Left Behind Act
    This law was put into effect in 2001. The law held schools accountable for how students learned and achieved. It focused on students who were in poverty, of color, receiving special education services, or had limited to no English. This goal was to provide more education opportunities for disadvantaged students to succeed.
