Special Education Historical Timeline

  • PENNSYLVANIA ASSOCIATION FOR RETARDED CITIZENS (PARC) V. COMMONWEALTH OF PENNSYLVANIA

Children with intellectual disabilities in Pennsylvania didn't have a right to public education. In 1972 a group of various people filed a decree against this. In 1972 they accepted the proposal and made it to where no schools could deny an education to retarded citizens. Due to this case all students regardless they have a disability or not have access to public education which in turn will help all students gain an education.
  • Rowley v. Hendrick Hudson School District ( 1984)

This case is to try and get a " free appropriate public education" for all handicapped children. It allows for personalized education plans be set up for students with a disability known as an IEP. This allows for all students access to learn based on their abilities rather then expect all students to learn the same things in the same way at the same time. https://www.law.cornell.edu/supremecourt/text/458/176(http://timetoast.com)
  • Honig v. Doe ( 1988).

This case is about students being disciplined from education based on behaviors that could be related to their disability. It was taken into court after 2 students got suspended for behaviors at school. The court rulings are that the discipline time be shortened and that meetings and possible changes be made to the individual students educational plan based on the behaviors. http://usedulaw.com/336-honig-v-doe.html
