Special Education

  • Child Find

    Student is identified as possibly in need of special education services. Student is having trouble with reading and writing fluency and is falling behind her peers.
  • Parental Notification

    Parent of student is notified of findings and presented with RTI option. Parent and teacher arrange meeting with other classroom teachers and administration to lay out plan.
  • RTI

    Before student is referred for special education services, a response to intervention plan, or RTI, is put in to play. Student will have individual help with reading and writing and will stay after school three times a week for reading and writing intervention.
  • Baseline Assessment

    Student is assessed through use of one on one reading and writing fluency testing and results are documented as baseline
  • RTI Week 1

    After one week of intervention, student is assessed again and progress is documented.
  • RTI Week 2

    Student is found to have made some progress, but student is still struggling. Intervention has been altered to include at home practice in addition to afterschool and in class assistance.
  • RTI Week 3

    Student is assessed and progress is documented. Student is making a bit more progress but is still struggling. Meeting is set up with parents, other classroom teachers, special education, and administrator to discuss referring student for special education services.
  • Referral Meeting

    Progress is shown to and discussed with parents. Parents agree that the response to intervention is not helping student progress beyond her original baseline. Parents request a referral to special education and is supported by education staff.
  • Initial Evaluation

    Special Education evaluates student and notes the assessments from the RTI. Per special education law, initial evaluation was done within 50 days of referral.
  • IEP

    An IEP, or Individualized Education Plan, is drawn up and agreed upon by all parties. Parents are given a copy of the IEP and are informed of the laws and rights involved with special education services.
  • IEP Implementation

    Per special education law, IEP was put in to play within 10 days of initial written consent by parent.
