Founded by the Spanish government for the Tigua Indians fleeing from the Pueblo revolt in New Mexico.
Fun fact: The location of the mission was poorly chosen. The mission got flooded 3 times by the Rio Grande River. -
Santísimo Nombre de María
Year founded: 1690
Founded to convert the Hasinai (Caddo) Indians.
Fun fact: It was destroyed by flood in 1692.

Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe de los Nacogdoches
Year founded:1716
Founded by the Spanish to keep France from coming into Texas.
Fun fact: about 80 years later, settlers moved into the mission. This began the town of Nacogdoches.

San Antonio de Valero (The Alamo)
Year founded: 1718
Founded to convert many of the Coahuiltecan bands to Catholicism.
Fun fact: The Battle of the Alamo took place here. -
San José y San Miguel de Aguayo
Year founded:1720
Founded because Mission San Antonio de Valero had become overcrowded.
Fun fact: It is the largest mission in Texas. -
Nuestra Señora del Espíritu Santo de Zúñiga (La Bahia)
Year founded: 1722
Founded to convert the local Cocos, Copanes, and Cujanes Indians.
Fun fact:
The mission developed into the first large-scale cattle ranch in Texas, with 40,000 cattle at the height of production in about 1778! -
San Francisco de la Espada
Year founded:1731
Built to convert the Nabedache tribe to christianity.
Fun fact: An aqueduct was built for this mission called Espada Acequia. It is still used today for farming. -
San Juan Capistrano
Year founded: 1731
Main supplier of other missions.
Fun fact: It never prospered due to un-sufficient land. -
Nuestra Señora del Rosario
Year founded: 1754
Founded to convert the Karankawa tribe.
Fun fact: The mission developed a large ranching system, but in 1781 the livestock was transferred to Mission Nuestra Señora del Espíritu Santo de Zúñiga.

Santa Cruz de San Sabá
Year founded: 1757
Founded to serve the Lipan Apache Indians.
Fun fact: In March, 1758 it was attacked by 2,000 Comanches, and was destroyed.
