Corpus Christi de San Antonio de la Ysleta
The Franciscans and the Tigua Indians who founded the mission were fleeing from the Pueblo Revolt in New Mexico, where Indians had risen up against the harsh and inflexible Spanish rule. They founded the mission in 1682.The site of the mission was poorly chosen. The nearby Rio Grand flooded and changed course frequently. The adobe structures of the mission were severely damaged or swept away several times in the 1740s, 1829, and in the 1850. The "onion dome." -
Mission Nuestra Señora de la Limpia Concepción de Los Piros de Socorro del Sur
ike other missions in the El Paso area, the Socorro mission was founded by refugees from the Pueblo Revolt of 1690, when hostile Indians drove the Spanish and allied tribes from the settlements, haciendas and missions in northern New Mexico. The current church is the mission’s third permanent church. It was dedicated on August 1, 1843, and is still in use. (Additions were made in 1876.) It is constructed of adobe bricks, covered with lime plaster. -
San Francisco de los Tejas
San Francisco de los Tejas was the first mission built in the Spanish state of Texas. Although there are earlier missions in what is now west Texas, when those missions were built the land was in Mexico. The original mission was near the present-day town of Weches, Texas. It was probably built of logs, since pine forests are plentiful in the area.The mission was abandoned in 1719 due to French claims on the land, but it was re-established in 1721. -
Mission San Antonio de Valero (The Alamo)
Mission San Antonio de Valero (The Alamo) was established on May 1, 1718 as the first Spanish mission along the San Antonio River. The mission was moved several times before it was located at a bend in the river that would be easy to defend. The early mission buildings were built of sod and wood. The first stone structure was built in 1727, and the current stone structure was built in 1744. The mission remained active until 1793, when mission activities in east Texas were ended. -
Mission San José y San Miguel de Aguayo
The mission was founded in 1720, because the nearby Mission San Antonio de Valero (The Alamo) had become overcrowded. Mission San José y San Miguel de Aguayo was named for Saint Joseph (San José) and the Marqués de San Miguel de Aguayo, the governor of the Province of Coahuila and Texas at the time. It is the largest of the Texas missions, and due to its size and beauty, it is called the Queen of the Missions. The first buildings, made of brush, straw, and mud. -
Mission San Francisco Xavier de Nájera
Mission San Francisco Xavier de Nájera was a short lived sub-mission of Mission San Antonio, meant to be the home to a group of about 50 families from the Sani and Yerbipiames Indian tribes. The families did not stay long, and due to budget limitations, the mission was closed in 1726. -
Mission San Juan Capistrano
The mission was originally founded in east Texas, near the current city of Cushing, as Mission San José de los Nazonis.By 1756, the structure had been replaced by a long, low adobe building, with a campanile (bell tower) at one end.A larger building was started in 1760, but it was never completed due to lack of funds.t 1,000 head of cattle, 100 horses, and 3,500 sheep or goats. -
Mission San Francisco de la Espada
In 1731, the mission was moved to the San Antonio River area and renamed Mission San Francisco de la Espada. The current chapel was completed in 1756. Several modern churches have been architecturally based on the design of this mission including St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church in Wimberley, Texas, north of San Antonio -
Mission Nuestra Señora del Rosario
The mission was established, 4 miles west of La Bahia, in November 1754 by Father Juan de Dios Camberos to minister to the Karankawa tribes. The mission developed a large ranching system, but in 1781 the livestock was transferred to Mission Nuestra Señora del Espíritu Santo de Zúñiga. The mission was closed in 1831. -
Mission Nuestra Señora del Refugio
Mission Nuestra Señora del Refugio was the final Spanish mission built in Texas. It was founded in February 1793 near the present day town of Long Mott . It did not do well in that location, and was moved to Mosquitos Creek in June 1794, and then to its final location on the Mission River in January 1795.Most of the buildings were completed by 1799. The church and a blacksmith shop were built of stone, while the other buildings were adobe.
