William McKinley was elected in the U.S.A. William was in favor of the independence of Cuba. The previous president was opposed to war but McKinley carryied United States to war. -

A Spanish minister, Enrique Dupuy de Lôme, offended to the United States with a letter written by Enrique in which said that McKinley was “weak and a bidder for the admiration of the crowd.” -
USS Maine
Because of the ofense, USA sent the USS Maine to La Habana in order to protect Cuba. The boat exploded and nobody knew why. Then the journalists blaimed Spain, fact that helped the growth of the hate to Spain. -
The independence of Cuba
The USA declared Cuba independent and demanded Spain to leave the island within three days. Spain did not accept the independence and get angry because of the USA declaration. -

Spain did not stand idly by and declared the war to the USA who immediately answered with another declaration of war to Spain. President McKinley requested $50 million to prepare for war and Congress approved the money. -
