In response to the Cuban revolt the Spanish sent this General to Cuba to restore order. He herded the entire rural population of western and central Cuba into concentration camps. Civilians could no longer give aid to rebels. About 300,000 were sent there and thousands died from hunger and disease.

Roosevelt led his Rough Riders and two other groups, the Ninth and the Tenth in a charge up the hill. They played a minor role in gaining it but Roosevelt was dubbed a hero. The hill was a strategicly important part of the war.

The brief and one-sided Spanish-American War comes to an end when Spain formally agrees to a peace protocol on U.S. terms: the cession of Cuba, Puerto Rico, and Manila in the Philippines to the United States pending a final peace treaty.

This treaty was signed in France to end the Spanish American War. The Spanish had to relinquish several of their overseas holdings. The Philippine, Guam, Puerto Rico, and Cuba. The Philippines were bought for $20 million, and Cuba became a U.S. protectorate.
