In 1895, a large patriotic movement took power in Cuba and many people struggled for independence from Spain. Cubans ask for help in the USA to fight the brutal repression from Spanish colony. -

Yellow jourlnalism is a sensational form of journalism. The exagerated news were used in the US to influence in people's opinion about the conflict. This happened especally in regard to the abuses and opression from spanish people to cubans during the rebellion in 1895. -
William McKinley
In 1897, after a strong campaign, he was elected president. He was in favour of taking part in the conflict in regard to cuba. -
A Letter from the Ambassador.
Enrique Dupuy le Lôme, the spanish ambassador, wrote a letter containing insults to President McKinley and his politics in Cuba and his weakness as a president. The letter was intercepted by the cuban rebels and shown to the US people in the newspapers. The incident made people and the president really angry. -
A Battleship Explosion
In February 15, 1898, USS Maine, an American battleship explodes in the Habana harbour. Arround 250 soldiers died in the accident. Even though it was an accident, it raised the demand for the US government to take part in the conflict. -
