    War takes place in Philippine Islands
    Before the war, Filipino independence had attracted the attention of Theodore Roosevelt. He had many American ships in Hong Kong on alert. Their leader, George Dewey, prepared his forces. When the war began, Dewey set out for Manila where part of the Spanish fleet was.     In order to gain control of Santiago's port, American troops had to capture San Juan Hill. African- American soldiers began to drive the Spanish back. Roosevelt and his Rough Riders joined as they rushed forward and captured the hill.

    Two days after the attack on San Juan Hill, American ships destroyed Spain's fleet as they tried to escape Santiago Harbor. On July 17, 1898, the city surrendered.

    Even though the war was fought over Cuba, U.S demanded Spain give them other colonies, including Puerto Rico, Guam, and the Philippines. Spain had no choice, and agreed. The final peace treaty was signed in Paris.

    After the war, U.S leaders wondered what to do with the Philippines. Filipinos had believed that Spain's defeat would bring them independence, but McKinley eventually decided that the Philippines should be an American colony.
